For those of you wondering about the three boys who broke into our home this past April we have an update. The boy who was 15 at the time of the burglary pleaded guilty to 3rd degree attempted burglary in Family Court. He is currently in some sort of a program away from Canton for 12 to 18 months during which time he must remain in school and be monitored by his parole officer. He will be made to pay restitution by the probation department. My understanding is that if he tows the line, stays in school and stays away from the other two boys and out of trouble for the next year, he will get a reduced sentence on his permanent record...and may even be able to have it expunged. This is the only one of the three boys who returned any of my jewelry. It is frustrating that charges will be reduced but his age has a lot to do with how this all works.
The oldest boy was due for sentencing on Monday, September 29th but that date has been postponed until November 3rd because he is still in inpatient care. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I am scheduled to speak to the judge before the court on the date of sentencing. I will update you when the time comes.
As to the third kid, I have no information at all. I have to contact the district attorney's office about what happens with him next. Apparently, the victim gets to suspend a great deal of their life in order to appear in court, over and over again. It is pretty frustrating to have to keep going over and over all of the details of the burglary when we are desperately trying to get over the entire incident. Even more frustrating to have to go over all the things that were taken when we have no hope of having any more of these items returned to us. But I guess that is just the way things are. I'll just have to get over it...again...and again.
