I have this set of Twitter and Facebook friends...and many of them are knitters and hookers (crochet silly!) One wonderful friend lives in London and she and her"stitchettes" created and run an amazing group called "STITCH LONDON." They are the largest organized group of knitters etc who actually get together and knit, in the world. They have a group on Ravelry and their own website and a newsletter you can sign up to recieve. These women and men get together every week or so and knit in a public location. They share stories, knit, crochet and craft together...sometimes for charity sometimes for the sheer joy of it. The stitchettes will teach anyone who is willing and has the requisite needles and a ball of yarn, to knit. I have never been to London but if I lived there I would surely be an avid member of STITCH LONDON! Some day I dream of hanging out with these wonderful folks!
SO lately, Lauren and the Stitch London folk have been knitting up their very own mini-mes for a terrific exhibit at the "London's Science Museum's re-opening of their "Who am I?" gallery in June 2010." So of course, when Lauren asked me (or rather told me she expected me to send one) I immediately began to build myself in cotton yarn. What fun!!! I have to get her finished very soon so I can send her to London by June 26th, 2010. I am getting there! Here are several pictures of my progress on my "Stitched Self"
My little stitched self ended up a little tall...sometimes that is the way of the hook...I tend to get a bit obsessive with how the project is going to work. I guess she didn't have to have bendable knees and arms but I got to thinking about how uncomfortable it would be for my stitched self to have locked knees when she will be standing with the crowd of other stitched selves...and though you can see I made a pair of shorts, I will remake them because they are really very stiff and do not show off my stitched self's rear end to advantage...which is a shame because I took such pains to make the butt in the first place. I have yet to stitch her little arms on but you can see my lovely little thumbs...I almost made all of the fingers but I restrained myself thought that has never been my strong suit. I also made lovely big toes on both feet..you may not be able to make them out...see?? Obsessed!
You still have time!!! You can make your OWN Stitched Self...and I think you should!! You can knit or crochet or you can sew one and do any kind of stitchery on it...For all of the details and free patterns and to read more about STITCH LONDON and all of their events go to:
